Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Preserving the vision that matters most

Your central vision is precious – it’s what allows you to read, recognise loved ones’ faces, and maintain your independence. If you’re concerned about age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or have noticed changes in your central vision, taking action now can make all the difference. Dr Juanita Pappalardo is here to help you understand your options and protect your sight.

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula – a small but crucial area at the centre of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. While AMD is the leading cause of severe vision loss in Australia, it’s important to know that it’s not an inevitable part of ageing, and much can be done to slow its progression.

Two types of AMD:

Dry AMD (85-90% of cases): The more common form, where tiny yellow deposits gradually accumulate in your macula. This typically progresses slowly over years, giving us time to monitor and manage the condition effectively.

Wet AMD (10-15% of cases): Less common but more serious, occurring when abnormal blood vessels leak fluid or blood under the macula. This requires prompt treatment but responds well to modern therapies when caught early.

Recognising the Signs

AMD often develops gradually, which means you might not notice changes initially. Many people first become aware of the condition during a routine eye examination – another reason why regular check-ups are so valuable.

Watch for these changes in your central vision:

  • Straight lines that appear wavy or bent
  • Blurry or dark areas in the centre of your vision
  • Difficulty recognising faces or reading
  • Colours appearing less vibrant
  • Trouble adjusting between bright and dim lighting
  • Words seeming to disappear when reading

Remember: AMD typically affects central vision while leaving peripheral vision intact, so you won’t go completely blind from this condition.

Understanding Your Risk Factors

While we can’t change some risk factors like age or family history, understanding them helps us create the best prevention and monitoring plan for you:

Non-modifiable factors:

  • Being over 50 years old
  • Family history of AMD
  • Genetic factors

Lifestyle factors you can influence:

  • Smoking (the most significant controllable risk factor)
  • Diet high in saturated fats
  • Lack of regular exercise
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Excessive UV light exposure

The empowering news is that healthy lifestyle choices can significantly reduce your risk and slow progression.

Prevention and Risk Reduction

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent AMD, you can take meaningful steps to protect your macula:

  • Stop smoking – this single change offers the greatest protection
  • Eat a macula-healthy diet – leafy greens, fish rich in omega-3s, and colourful fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise regularly – improves blood flow to your eyes
  • Protect your eyes from UV light – wear quality sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat
  • Manage blood pressure and cholesterol – supports healthy blood vessels in your eyes

Family history matters: If AMD runs in your family, inform Dr Pappalardo so she can recommend appropriate screening intervals.

How We Diagnose AMD

Early detection is key to preserving your vision. Dr Pappalardo uses comprehensive diagnostic techniques to identify AMD in its earliest stages, often before you notice any symptoms.

Your assessment includes dilated eye examination to thoroughly view your macula, advanced macular scanning technology to detect subtle changes, and baseline documentation for future monitoring. You’ll also learn to use an Amsler grid – a simple home monitoring tool that helps detect changes between visits.

Treatment and Management

For Dry AMD:

  • Regular monitoring to detect any progression or conversion to wet AMD
  • Macular vitamin supplements when appropriate, based on your specific condition
  • Lifestyle modifications to slow progression
  • Home monitoring with an Amsler grid

For Wet AMD:

  • Anti-VEGF injections – highly effective treatments delivered comfortably into the eye
  • Regular treatment schedule to maintain and often improve vision
  • Close monitoring to adjust treatment as needed

The goal is always to preserve your functional vision and maintain your quality of life.

Living Well with AMD

An AMD diagnosis doesn’t mean giving up the activities you love. With proper treatment and support, many people continue to lead active, independent lives. Dr Pappalardo will work with you to develop strategies that help you adapt while maximising your remaining vision.

Modern treatments have transformed the outlook for people with AMD, particularly wet AMD. When detected early and treated promptly, many patients maintain good functional vision for years to come.
