Pterygium Surgery Recovery

Understanding the recovery process helps you prepare for optimal healing and results.

What to Expect: Week by Week

First 24 hours:

  • Anaesthetic block provides several hours of comfort
  • Mild to moderate discomfort as anaesthetic wears off
  • Prescribed pain relief manages any discomfort effectively

First week:

  • The feeling of a gritty sensation and redness are normal
  • Most day-to-day activities can resume as comfortable
  • Reading, computer work, and driving may be difficult

Weeks 2-4:

  • Gradual improvement in comfort and appearance
  • Eye looks significantly better by 3-4 weeks
  • Most people generally feel “back to normal” by 3-4 weeks

Your Recovery Medications

Antibiotic drops – Used for one week to prevent infection
Anti-inflammatory drops – Required for approximately six weeks to optimise healing
Lubricating drops – Preservative-free drops used as needed for comfort throughout recovery

Clear instructions are provided for proper drop administration and timing.

Activity Guidelines

Immediate activities (as comfortable):

  • Reading and computer work
  • Light household tasks
  • Driving (when vision comfortable)

Temporary restrictions:

  • Intense exercise – Avoid for one month
  • Swimming – Wait one month
  • Eye protection – Keep clean and covered during bathing for two weeks
  • Sunglasses – Essential outdoors during healing

Managing Temporary Effects:

Double vision – Some patients may experience brief double vision when looking away from the surgery side. This typically resolves within days to two weeks.

Appearance changes – Initial redness and swelling are part of normal healing. The final cosmetic result emerges over several weeks.

Your Follow-up Care:

Essential appointments:

  • Day after surgery – Check healing progress and eye comfort
Four weeks post-surgery – Assess healing and adjust medications

Additional visits are scheduled based on your individual recovery progress.

Signs of Excellent Recovery:

Most patients find recovery smoother than anticipated. Following post-operative instructions carefully optimises your healing and helps achieve the best possible long-term result.
Your surgical site will continue improving for several months, with the final cosmetic outcome typically apparent by three months.

Dr Juanita Pappalardo provides comprehensive post-operative care to ensure optimal recovery and excellent long-term results from your pterygium surgery.
