How is a pterygium diagnosed?
A pterygium is usually diagnosed during a careful eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
The process generally begins by discussing the patient’s medical history, which can include questions about symptoms, family history of eye conditions, and any excessive exposure to sunlight or other possible risk factors, such as dry environments.
To accurately diagnose a pterygium, the optometrist or ophthalmologist will use a a slit lamp (a specialised microscope with a light) to closely inspect the surface of the eye.
They will also discuss any associated symptoms, such as irritation, redness, or changes in vision, to determine how the pterygium may be influencing the patient’s general eye health.
Can another eye condition be mistaken for a pterygium?
While diagnosing a pterygium is typically a straightforward process, there are some less common conditions that can be mistaken for the condition.
While uncommon, a cancerous growth on the surface of the eye can sometimes be mistaken for a pterygium growth. Another condition is pinguecula, which affects about 40% of people in Australian and can also resemble a pterygium. Very rarely, a condition called limbal deficiency may also appear similar to a pterygium.
Sometimes, changes can occur in the eye that appear similar to a pterygium can also occur after damage to the eye’s surface.
Differing the condition from other eye health concerns is highly important, and one of the reasons that a clear diagnosis should always be made by a professional, using appropriate equipment.
Why is a clear diagnosis important?
Clearly diagnosing a pterygium is important for the proper management and treatment of the condition, as well as to distinguish it from other possible eye health conditions.
A misdiagnosis may lead to ineffective or unnecessary treatments, or failing to diagnose another condition that may require different treatment. A precise diagnosis also allows for clear monitoring of any possible progression of the condition.
